Thirteen-Arch Bridge (13 Arch Bridge)

Thirteen-Arch Bridge (13 Arch Bridge)

The Thirteen-Arch Bridge (13 Arch Bridge) is a beautiful bridge located at Kazhuthurutty, near Thenmala in Kollam district. The former Kollam–Sengottai metre-gauge railway line passes over this bridge, while the Kollam–Thirumangalam National Highway (NH 208) runs beneath it. This railway route, which connected the industrial cities of Kollam and Madras, is known for its numerous tunnels, bridges, and other engineering structures. The Thirteen-Arch Bridge and the Punalur Suspension Bridge are excellent examples of British engineering technology.

The bridge has thirteen arches, which are characteristic features of colonial-era architecture. Measuring 102 metres in length and 5 metres in height, the Thirteen-Arch Bridge has remained in excellent condition even after more than 100 years. It is also noteworthy that the bridge was constructed during the British period using the Surki method, and no cement was used in its construction. This highlights the remarkable durability and craftsmanship of the engineering techniques employed at that time.
